La Agenda Nacional de Liderazgo Hispano lanza un reto a todos los candidatos a involucrar directamente a los latinos como parte de la campaña presidencial

WASHINGTON, DC— 4 de abril de 2016— Dos contendientes a la Casa Blanca respondieron al cuestionario presidencial de la Agenda Nacional de Liderazgo Hispano (NHLA, por sus siglas en inglés) tras un plazo de un mes concedido a cada uno de los candidatos a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos. Desde la economía hasta la salud y la educación, desde los derechos civiles hasta la inmigración y la reforma del sistema de justicia penal, el cuestionario presidencial de NHLA proporcionó una plataforma integral para que los candidatos nos brindaran su visión y sus recomendaciones para lidiar con los problemas principales de política pública que afectan a los 58 millones de latinos en los Estados Unidos. El cuestionario presidencial es el primer resultado tangible de la Campaña de Participación Presidencial de la NHLA, de un año de duración, lanzada en el otoño de 2015 con el fin de iniciar un diálogo con todos los candidatos presidenciales. Esta campaña no partidista es la única iniciativa, en nombre de la comunidad latina, para involucrarnos activamente y de manera significativa con los candidatos, para adelantar las principales prioridades de la comunidad.

La ex Secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton y el Senador Bernie Sanders han sido los dos candidatos que han respondido los cuestionarios hasta el momento. NHLA distribuyó el cuestionario a todos los candidatos activos de los dos grandes partidos luego de la publicación de la Agenda Hispana de Política Pública del 2016 el pasado 25 de febrero. La agenda de política cuatrienal pretende ser una hoja de ruta para los funcionarios elegidos para lidiar con las prioridades de política pública de la comunidad latina. Como parte de la Campaña de Participación Presidencial de un año de duración, NHLA se comunicó con las campañas de los candidatos de los partidos principales para solicitar respuestas. “Nuestro cuestionario presidencial, junto con todos los esfuerzos coordinados a través de esta campaña de participación, pone de relieve nuestro esfuerzo concertado para lanzar un reto a cada aspirante presidencial, a que nos diga cuál es su posición sobre los temas más críticos que afectan a nuestra comunidad”, dijo Héctor Sánchez, presidente de la NHLA y director ejecutivo del Consejo Sindical para el Avance del Trabajador Latinoamericano. “Si bien no apoyamos ni nos oponemos a ningún candidato a un puesto electivo, creemos que el no entablar un diálogo con la comunidad latina impide que un candidato llegue a la Casa Blanca. Sólo dos de los cinco contendientes actuales han devuelto el cuestionario, los otros tres que faltan tienen que ponerse al día. Nuestra puerta permanece abierta para que estos tres candidatos presidenciales respondan. Tenemos la esperanza de que se involucren directamente con nuestra comunidad para explorar y abordar las prioridades de los latinos, que son una parte integral del crecimiento económico, social y cultural de esta nación”.

“Como muchos ya han señalado, la elección del 2016 puede ser la elección nacional más importante en este medio siglo, y está claro que el voto latino jugará un papel decisivo en el resultado de las elecciones, como lo ha tenido al menos en las últimas dos elecciones presidenciales”, afirmó Thomas A. Sáenz, vicepresidente de NHLA y presidente y consejero general de MALDEF. “Decididamente, la comunidad latina no es una comunidad de un solo tema, y la información solicitada en el cuestionario de NHLA ayuda a que los votantes latinos tengan información en un gran número de temas críticos, para que puedan tomar una decisión meditada y de gran impacto en noviembre próximo.”

Durante los últimos meses, la Campaña de Participación Presidencial de la NHLA ha puesto en marcha una serie de iniciativas para poner de relieve la importancia de la comunidad latina, su influencia como un electorado y sus prioridades de política pública. A medida que las elecciones primarias dan paso a las elecciones generales del próximo mes de noviembre, la NHLA contactará a los comités de plataforma de los principales partidos y llevará a cabo eventos en la convenciones nacionales republicana y demócrata, además de trabajar con el Congreso para continuar presionando por acción bipartidista en los temas de política pública que benefician no sólo a los latinos en los Estados Unidos, sino a todos en el país. Hoy en día, la comunidad latina comprende más de la mitad del crecimiento de la población de los Estados Unidos, con proyecciones que estiman que el grupo minoritario se duplicará para el año 2050. De hecho, el sólido crecimiento de los latinos ha elevado su importancia en la configuración del curso del panorama político de los EE.UU. En medio de la retórica divisiva que se ha infiltrado en este ciclo electoral, la comunidad latina se ha movilizado activamente para comunicar de una manera más amplia sus preocupaciones y contrarrestar los mensajes de odio que amenazan el futuro de su comunidad. Con 28 millones de latinos elegibles para votar, los votantes latinos son un electorado con el que cualquier candidato presidencial serio se debe involucrar y responder a ellos, si quiere resultar victorioso en este ciclo electoral.

NHLA no apoya ni se opone a los candidatos a cargos públicos. La aptitud de los candidatos para el cargo debe ser juzgada por una variedad de cualificaciones que van más allá de sus respuestas al cuestionario presidencial de la NHLA.
